Pupils with grades from other countries

Grades from other countries cannot be compared with those from the Swedish compulsory schools and consequently, pupils with grades from other countries cannot compare their grades with pupils from Swedish compulsory schools.  Instead, these applicants will be tested on an “independent quota". The admission within the independent quota is decided on the basis of a total judgement of the complete merits and on special grounds. The part responsible for the education, i.e. the municipality you apply to, or the independent upper secondary school, forms an opinion of the final grades you have received from an international school or another country. It is a matter of independent judgement and not a judgement based on grades.

If you apply for the secondary International Baccalaureate programme in Sweden, you must qualify, i.e. have passed the grades in English and mathematics. The qualification is judged on the foreign final grades. Note that the IB-education in most cases in Sweden includes three years of studies. The first year, the Pre- IB, is a preparatory year. During that year you prepare for the proper IB-education, which you study during the remaining two years.

Pupils applying for the International Baccalaureate are summoned for a test. Get in contact with the appropriate school to find out exactly what their test involves.

In order to be admitted to an education within the independent quota of the Swedish national upper secondary education programme in the final admission, you need, apart from English and mathematics, also to have passed in Swedish. To pass in Swedish, you need to have studied Swedish according to the Swedish curriculum. In case that the applicant has not taken the Swedish course and needs to take it, you can contact “Sofia Distans", which is an educational organisation that offers Swedish compulsory school courses via distance education.

Final grades are to be sent to the Upper Secondary Schools Admission Office, where the judgement upon qualifications will be made. If possible, send the preliminary grades during the autumn term. Scandinavian, English, French, German and Spanish grades do not need to be translated. Grades from other countries need to be translated. When a judgement of fulfilled qualifications has been made, the Upper Secondary Schools Admission Office will send the grade documents with information of fulfilled qualification to the respective decision-maker:
Decision-maker in each municipality (municipal upper secondary schools)
Responsible decision-maker at the independent upper secondary school
It is the decision-maker who makes the decision that the pupil will be accepted to the applied programme. The decision about admission will be made on the basis of the final grades that the pupil receives from his/her school.
This information is addressed to the applicants for educations within Stockholm County. When applying outside Stockholm County, contact respective admission secretariat.
